“Daily Show” Viewers are the Best Informed

Link: https://dannyman.toldme.com/2004/09/29/daily-show-uber-alles/

If you are a fan of Jon Stewart, then this is the best article ever. It turns out, according to an Annenberg survey, that viewers of the “Daily Show” are better-informed on election issues than people who read newspapers four days a week.

60 percent of “Daily Show” viewers answered all six questions correctly. Just 42 percent of those who read a newspaper four days a week aced the test. Only 40 percent of those who watch network news four days a week got every answer right.

Bush as Dean

Link: https://dannyman.toldme.com/2004/09/28/bush-as-dean/

You know everybody is sort of slowly accepting that maybe George Bush will get re-elected after all, and they might as well plan for another four years of darkness and incompetence. I don’t feel that way.

A month before the Iowa primaries Kerry looked like a pathetic loser unable to compete with the tough, say-it-like-it-is Howard Dean. Dean looked unstoppable, and inevitable, while Kerry looked doomed to a normal life. Dean is now a footnote. (more…)

Iraqi GIs Prefer Kerry

Link: https://dannyman.toldme.com/2004/09/21/soldiers-prefer-john-kerry/

A good read from The Christian Science Monitor:

“9 out of 10 of the people I talk to, it wouldn’t matter who ran against Bush – they’d vote for them,” said a US soldier in the southern city of Najaf, “people are so fed up with Iraq, and fed up with Bush.”

The Race is Close

Link: https://dannyman.toldme.com/2004/09/17/bush-kerry-polling-close/

It is getting exciting today over at electoral-vote.com:

The poll also concluded that without Nader, Kerry is leading Bush nationally by 48% to 45% and with Nader by 46% to 45% with Nader at 3%. Among likely voters, it is Kerry 47%, Bush 47%, Nader 3%. The Harris national poll (Sept. 9-13) puts Kerry ahead 48% to 47% and the Pew poll (Sept. 11-14) puts Bush ahead 47% to 46%. In contrast, Gallup (Sept. 13-15) has Bush ahead 55% to 42%.

Read This: Notes from the RNC

Link: https://dannyman.toldme.com/2004/09/16/rnc-notes-nyc-detention/

2600 has posted Notes From the RNC – The 8/31 Experience, a long recounting of the thirty three hours that one journalist experienced in detention, after being penned in by the NYPD for standing on the wrong sidewalk at the wrong time. It is definately worth a read by any American. (Thanks, Mike!)

I’ve been lucky enough to talk to a few people, both online and in person, who were also swept off the streets during the convention. We shared stories and experiences and it became obvious that we really needed to do this. A tale of injustice, even one that is dwarfed by others, needs to be told.

If Bush had his way . . .

Link: https://dannyman.toldme.com/2004/09/16/bush-way/

George Bush has this line in his stump speech:

“If John Kerry had his way, Saddam Hussein would still be in power!”

I think John Kerry could weave this in to his stump speech:

“If George Bush had his way, Osama bin Laden would still be at large!”

It makes me grin. (more…)

Touch Screen Voting: Just Say No

Link: https://dannyman.toldme.com/2004/09/09/touchscreen-voting-just-say-no/

California is suing Diebold, the nation’s largest manufacturer of touch-screen voting machines because the company lied about the machines’ security. According to the LA Times:

The system’s key vulnerability is that county election workers or others with access to the machines could type in a two-digit code and create a second set of results that would then be forwarded to the state as the county’s official tally.

I am curious what purpose that feature may have, beyond the obvious application of election fraud. (more…)

The tale of Ian Spiers, one brown American, trying to take a few photographs, in a time of fearful paranoia. Very much worth a read.

Krugman: Feel the Hate

Link: https://dannyman.toldme.com/2004/09/03/weird-gop-hatred/

A nice op-ed from Paul Krugman:

Barack Obama, who gave the Democratic keynote address, delivered a message of uplift and hope. Zell Miller, who gave the Republican keynote, declared that political opposition is treason: “Now, at the same time young Americans are dying in the sands of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan, our nation is being torn apart and made weaker because of the Democrats’ manic obsession to bring down our commander in chief.” And the crowd roared its approval.

Roared Jon Stewart, “how dare they … field a candidate … and in an election year!” (more…)

John Kerry Throws Down

Link: https://dannyman.toldme.com/2004/09/02/john-kerry-throws-down/

“The vice president even called me unfit for office last night. I guess I’ll leave it up to the voters whether five deferments makes someone more qualified to defend this nation than two tours of duty.”

Boo-yah! Thanks kos! More stuff at The New York Times, including:

“Letting the Saudi royal family control our energy costs makes you unfit to lead this nation. Handing out billions of government contracts to Halliburton while you’re still on their payroll makes you unfit.”

Thanks, Ginmar: (Corroborated)

LAUER: Did John Kerry serve heroicly, in Vietnam, in your opinion?

BUSH: I think his service is heroic, yes, and he’s… he should be proud of it. And, uh, and I think that we ought to move beyond, uhm, [pause] the past. I mean, he’s proud of his service, I’m proud of mine. And the real question is who best to lead us forward? (more…)

Iraq’s Middle Road

Link: https://dannyman.toldme.com/2004/08/19/iraqi-asshole/

Three marines were driving up the highway between Basra and Baghdad when they came upon an Iraqi insurgent who was badly injured and unconscious. On the opposite side of the road was an injured American who was semiconscious. As the Marines gave both men first aid they asked what happened. The American said, “I was moving north along the highway when I ran into this guy. We pointed our guns at each other and I said ‘Saddam Hussein is an asshole.’ Then he yelled, ‘George Bush is an asshole.’ We were standing there shaking hands when a truck hit us.

Two Electoral Vote Maps

So, you may already know about electoral-vote.com, which shows the current state of Bush versus Kerry, based on all the latest polls, and Kerry has a wonderful lead just now. Then you start thinking about 2000 and you might start whining that you want popular elections.

Well, how about a compromise solution? The Fake Is The New Real Electoral Reform Map re-aligns the map of the United States so that we have fifty states that are roughly equal in size. (more…)

A Humbling Reminder for Americans

Link: https://dannyman.toldme.com/2004/08/03/bush-humble/

Jon Roma got me thinking, by quoting a speech from Senator Robert Byrd:

We are at a dangerous time in our Republic. The Constitution — the very foundation of this great country — is under attack by a presidency that is bent upon secrecy, that has to be dragged kicking and screaming to answer questions, and that follows a path of utter recklessness. Its policies have changed the face of America around the globe from that of a giant peacemaker to that of a schoolyard bully. People who once declared strong allegiance with America now question our purpose.

I supported the war. A lot of that is because the Middle East has been dangerously stuck in the past, and the few Iraqis I’ve met all seemed seriously haunted by Saddam Hussein, and the unfinished Gulf War in 1991, when they thought “liberation” may have been at hand. I even defended the distasteful way that Bush went about starting the war — by being a unilateralist bully — because we have had a tendancy to invade other countries, throughout our history, whenever we found it politically convenient, and I don’t see this changing any time soon. The “benefit” is that Americans and those in other countries who love America are reminded that, despite our martyrdom on 9/11, we are not perfect — we are a reckless, arrogant people, and there should be some wariness in dealings with America.
