Last Monday morning there was a phone call from Pittsburg.
"This is the HR person with the Financial Institution in Pittsburg ... actually, I have you on speaker phone with this other person so we can get your verbal authorization for drug testing."
"Okay."
"The Financial Institution is comitted to a Drug-Free Work Environment. If you are offered a position at Financial Institution, yadda yadda pee in a cup to prove you don't do drugs and so forth yadda yadda ya you consent."
There was a pause where I realised they weren't asking a question, and that I was to express myself.
"I'm sorry, but I can not consent."
"... you consent?"
"No, I can not consent, I'm sorry."
"Well, we can not make you an offer unless you consent. Do you have any questions that I can answer ..."
"No, I understand, I wish you the best of luck in finding a suitably qualified applicant."
Joe was in the room with me. He was the one who had answered the phone. I could feel his approval. Sometimes, it is nice to not be alone in your beliefs, and to have friends who support your moral choices.
