Self Portrait

Done in Thailand. I don’t recall if this was before or after I got sunburned. Pretty colorful for a white guy!

I was sitting in the Danish cafe in Kata, Thailand. I was thinking of the rhinoceros I photographed two months before at the Berlin Zoo. I drew him from memory, so this guy is one horn short and has floppy ears like my old dog, Max. I did try to move him, in my fantasy, from institution to the great outdoors.
This is a favorite of mine.

Looking kind of Greek, I think.

I had started with the lines of a womans face, and how her hair flows in a way that conveys motion, then played with the idea of scan lines. Food for thought, anyway.

I was doodling in a cafe or a bar in Thailand and a woman told me to draw her. Obviously I am not a portrait artist and this woman looks a bit odd. But I like this drawing somehow: I think its the eyes, and how she almost comes out right but since she is off-kilter she is more interesting.

Again, at the Danish cafe in Kata, Thailand. This green man and the blue bookshelf are on the same page as the coffee cup.

I like this guy. Another alien type, with a melty look.

Just your average green woman, sitting under an umbrella.

I tried to sketch the guitar player. Then I got frustrated and excited, flipped the paper, and did a more “impressionistic” style. Another from The Post, in Hat Yai, Thailand.

Inspired by too march partying at the Post, in Hat Yai, Thailand.

I was in a Danish cafe in Kata, Thailand. Good coffee and pastries: what more could I ask? So, I started doodling, or sketching . . . or, here, shading.

Arms outstretched, birds in a sky. This is a crude sketch, but I enjoy the care-free emotion it conveys.

I spent Christmas, 2002 in Hat Yai, Thailand. Most nights I was at The Post, where a Red Hot Chili Peppers cover band jammed. This sketch reminds me of those days.
