“History aint Changed”

The change, it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the fold, that’s all
And the world looks just the same
And history ain’t changed

Remember how Iraq used to be run by a brutal tyrant who did nasty things to minority elements? Until American troops came in and liberated the place, and ran the jails, except after awhile the American troops got crazy again? Well, now the Iraqis are running the jails, and the minorities are being mistreated, and we know this to be true after American troops come in and liberate stuff:

The prisoners, many malnourished and some showing signs of torture, were found when US troops took control of [an] interior ministry building on Sunday.

The US operation followed persistent inquiries from the family of one of those held, most of whom were Sunnis.

I hope that Salam Pax, wherever he is, can appreciate the depressing dark humor, and that the West already has a song to describe it.

Looking at things less cynically . . . American troops are the good guys this time, and elections are coming to replace the interim government . . . the government acknowledges bad things happened and has promised to investigate. Prison brutality, especially of minority groups, is a recurring theme in any country, no matter how progressive, but at least in this case there was a balance of power — Iraqi Interim Government versus American occupation forces — and there is progress. We hope.

But, man . . .
