On Tuesday, Uncle John helped me scrub the shoe polish off the back of the car. He suggested that if I wanted to do NYC that Dave Baldwin McConeghey was a hospitable guy. Mom didn't have his contact info, and Grandma didn't have his number, but she sent him an e-mail. After lunch with mom at the hospital, Uncle and I visited AAA and scored a dozen maps and some camping guides. The plan was to shoot up to Michigan, then through Canada to Niagra Falls, and then descend upon the East Coast - NYC or DC or both. We shall see. I called Grandma Howard and she and Bill were eager to see me, out of the blue. I pushed up north and made Rapid River by midnight Eastern time. A good night's sleep on Grandma's couch brings us to the story I have started here, and told using my work laptop on Grandma's kitchen table. It is always so good to make it up here.
And now 'tis 1:15 PM. I must close up here, as Canada awaits ...
There is a song about Lake Shore Drive in Chicago. "And there aint no road quite like it, any where I've found ..." Well, if you drive far enough North you find yourself on Michigan's Upper Penninsula. There aint no road quite like it, anywhere I've found, driving East toward Canada. The stench of pine trees on your left, and the Lake peeking in and out at you on your right. You just have to pull over once in a while to appreciate the beauty. Campsites abound along this route, as rightly they should.
As I drive along I think how I'd like to find the right woman and settle down in a cozy house up here and leave the world be for a few years. Combine some solar-powered, satellite-driven Internet access with chopping wood. I know it won't happen though and I'm not sure it would retain my interest for so long. I'll be back in Cali in a few weeks, but we all have to have a fantasy once in a while, eh?
Well, back on the road. I'm headed toward Mackinack, pronounced "Mack in aw," then North on the Interstate, I-75, I believe, to Sault Saint Marie, pronounced "Sue Saint Marie," where I should cross the border and head East on what appears to be 17 South. Figured out Driving through Michigan and crossing North of Detroit is about as speedy a way through Canada to Niagra Falls as Sault, so I'll take the more Northern route. I'll drive on the Metric system for a while.
Making great mileage. I think when I started that Tesla's lifetime mileage was around 55 MPG. Now it is near 63 MPG. Whew! Well, back to the road. I have a long drive ahead of me.
