Enduring Freedom

So, the bombs are falling on Al-Qaida and the Taliban. Well, that's Bush's call. I guess it helps take out anti-aircraft weaponry that would otherwise be used to shoot down other planes that are dropping food on the poor and starving of Afghanistan.

I didn't approve of the Gulf War but I have to say that so far, I can not find fault with Bush's response so far. Yeah, the War rhetoric is a little disturbing, but the fact that the government has taken time to rally support through diplomacy, and is complementing bombs with food ... well, it sounds like we are doing the right thing.

And I was thinking about this "Enduring Freedom" moniker. At first, it struck me as a little silly. Endure freedom? Freedom is something to endure? Well, I'm flying to Chicago next week. There is a minor amount of risk involved. My home town, Chicago, boasts the tallest building in the world. They'd love to bring that down! But, I'm not afraid. Americans will endure. "Enduring Freedom" not only means that freedom will endure, but that the free world will endure the cost of freedom. I'm not afraid to die at the hands of some morally diseased religious fanatics. Our brothers and sisters in Britain endured freedom under Nazi air raids in World War II. They were not cowed. I believe that Americans are in far less danger today. We will not be cowed. Instead, we will be helped by the United Kingdom.

I feel sad about the people in Afghanistan that have to endure terror. Some of them will endure our bombs, and many of those will be innocents. War is a mess. War is terrible. I hope this war doesn't last long. I hope that we can help more than we can hurt. People die, I can only hope that these deaths will be followed by a better future for those that live.
