Brunch with Grandma and Uncle John. We spent some time at the Field Museum, then saw Grandma off. Uncle John and I wandered along the lake front, visiting Meig's field, where they had two cool presentations - one was a model of a coal-powered aircraft carrier where WWII pilots got their training on Lake Michigan before making their way to combat. Among these was President Bush - not the current Choad we have in office but his father, who, while not my favorite as Presidents go, definately deserves some recognition for his part in The War, as so many of our grandparents do. But the thought of a steam-powered aircraft carrier ... true, 'twas just a trainer, that was converted at no great expense to help the war effort, but the image of such a thing chugging off the Chicago lake front with Navy pilots earning their chops ... quite a thought! There are supposed to be several planes at the bottom of the lake, well-preserved in frigid fresh water, who didn't quite make their landing.
The other presentation that they had was the plan to convert Meig's Field, eventually, in to the mother of all lakefront parks, including facilities for snorkeling and overnight camping for city kids. What a thought! While I don't object to Meig's Field itself, and hadn't been too keen on the idea of converting it to yet another lakefront park, because it is kind of neat to have this little airport in the middle of everything, that park has begun to sound pretty neat. I also noted that the only regular flights at the only commercial airline serving Meig's field were to Springfield. I figure if Governor Ryan doesn't want to let Daley expand O'Hare then Daley can tell him to fly through it.
We walked further along the lakefront, making our way eventually to Gino's East for what we both agreed was a somewhat disappointing pizza, and hopped on the El to get home.
