Photos Flickr

WARNING!

This plugin works okay on WordPress 2.2, and doesn’t work so well on newer versions.

If you would like a “hot patch” to keep it from crashing on WordPress 2.3+, replace the photo-flickr/photos-flickr.php with this file:

http://dannyman.toldme.com/warez/photos-flickr.php.txt

Description

Photos Flickr is a development version of a plugin that I am writing for WordPress blog software to display a user’s Flickr photos within their blog. The result? Someone with a WordPress blog can now have a basic interface to let readers view their Flickr images, using their own web site and design.

Photos Flickr makes use of Dan Coulter’s PHPFlickr library, which in turn accesses the Flickr API.

Installation

Note: If you are using a version of photos-flickr older than 0.5, remove your old wp-content/plugins/photos-flickr.php file.

  1. Download and extract the Photos Flickr software archive: photos-flickr-0.7.tar.gz or photos-flickr-0.7.zip
  2. Install the plugins/photos-flickr directory from the archive to your WordPress wp-content/plugins/ directory.
  3. Log in to your WordPress Admin interface. Visit the Plugins panel, and Activate the Photos Flickr plugin.
  4. Within your WordPress Admin interface, visit Plugins » Photos Flickr and enter your Flickr User ID.
  5. Install the themes/default/photos.php file from the archive to your preferred theme’s subdirectory within your WordPress wp-content/themes/.
  6. Within your WordPress Admin interface, visit Page » Write Page to create a new page. Name it “Photos” and set the Page Template to “Photos”.
  7. Visit the “Photos” page you just created . . . do you get to access your Flickr photo stream? If so, congratulations! If not, please contact me.

Customizing Photos Flickr

Warning: This plugin is not yet fully-baked. It does much of what I want, but there is more work to do. If you keep to the default template, everything should be fine. If you choose to customize your own template, there is a non-zero risk that a future version will change a function’s name or behavior and break your template.

If you are comfortable hacking on templates and want to improve the look-and-feel of your Photos page, refer to the Function Reference documentation.

If you develop a nice “Photos” template for a public theme that you would like to share, let me know.

If you like, dislike, have feedback or ideas about Photos Flickr, or just want to be friendly, shoot me a line!

Known Bugs

Hi Danny, great concept. FYI-On a fresh plugin installation with WP 2.3 i get this error:
Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare is_tag() (previously declared in /home/hutto/public_html/wp-includes/query.php:94) in /home/hutto/public_html/wp-content/plugins/photos-flickr/photos-flickr.php on line 722

Hello,

It looks like photos-flickr is not yet compatible with 2.3. I’ll work on this. Sorry for the trouble.

Just curious when the update will come out… I absolutely loved my flickr gallery on my blog but since updating, it doesn’t work anymore. :(

Christopher,

I was very very very slow in catching up my WP version, but now I am
upgrading via SVN.

There is a one-line fix to get the plugin to not crash. Unfortunately
. . . oh, now that I have upgraded to 2.5 even the photo view pages
are broken.

I believe the new WordPress comes with a built in “photo gallery”
function. Hopefully within the next month I can rewrite the plugin
around whatever theme photo gallery tags are now “standard” with the
idea that instead of the WordPress gallery you could instead access
the Flickr gallery . . .

I’m sorry for the delayed inconvenience. If you’d like the on-line ix
for 2.2 let me know. I should post it . . . :(
