Slow Day

Sat Jan 3 08:44:59 CST 1998

It's a nice day out so far today. In order to jostle my senses I took a walk up to the Bank, shuffled some of my money around, dropped by Jewel to pick up some Milk, OJ and butter, and am back here writing.

And my mind is more or less blank, despite the constant firing of neurons.

"Life House" I think I enjoy a great deal. The wariness regarding prose and computers is simply coz I know too much but beyond that, it was a really fun story. Enough action, but the plot was complex and exciting. I guess I say again like Heinlein, like Pohl, written at some times like Douglas Adams. While sometimes the prose was unnecessarily complicated, often, it was about as enjoyable to read as it was possible to make me try to out-think it. (Damn Rhetoric classes!)

I'm not going to suggest anything about prose here, I'll just recommend the book. It's a fine story.

So what have I been working on all night? I'm rewriting the indexing CGI to make it more flexible and stuff, and hopefully even re-useable on other's sites.

We'll see. I've got functions set up for quickly setting up a hash of dates corresponding to title/description and returning it to whomever calls them. This data can be cached so that the viewer won't have to wait for the data to be extracted from the HTML files. I dunno how much faster this'll make things, but it makes them "better" from the idea of coding style.

What to do now? Maybe today I can keep myself awake long enough to push myself back into a regular sleep schedule. We'll see ...

Catching Up

My INBOX has 19 messages in it ... 45 before I re-synched ...

Not bad ... narrowed down to the "big stuff" like "get something written about escort policy" or "crit stuff" ... and arguments with 'toly.

This American Life is nearly done. I'll go ask Uncle to help look over the van soon.
