A tax cut might save the economy from the recession it is overdue for by a month or two, but there seems to be a fundamental problem in that we are all thought of as consumers, and we are supposed to buy things, but we've been doing it for so long that we are largely in debt and maybe we need to stop spending our money foolishly. Since the current economy is based on us consumers buying stuff we don't need, things are really going to hurt until we all figure out what the economy SHOULD do. Personally, I think we shouldn't bother with the tax cut, but focus on paying down the national debt, which will in turn push down interest rates and maybe make the whole paying off our debts thing easier. If there's money left over let's see if we can rig up Social Security so it wont get destroyed when my mom retires. If we have a few dollars and some time left over, maybe we can pull off national health care. In the short term, we should surrender the war on drugs and take the money we have been spending on it, and the tax revenues from legalized drugs, and spend it on three things: a) Drug education and rehabilition. For everything from caffeine to nicotine to alcohol to crack cocaine. b) AIDS drugs and other useful resources for Africa. c) National health care. Meanwhile, if we get national health care we can take some serious deductions out of a lot of pay checks, introducing a goodly amount of cash in to the economy that we can either spend foolishly, pay off our credit cards with, or chuck in to our 401k accounts since Social Security is going to be destroyed. Oh, and yes, teachers are underpaid. Personally, though, I'd like to see a future where the public education system is there to teach specialized subjects and provide support for special needs, but most education comes from adults who are less busy pursuing money to buy things they don't really need and are instead building communities with each other by teaching the kids, who are in turn socialized to interact with and respect adults, and not like a bunch of fucked-up hooligans socialized by commercials on TV encouraging them to buy stuff they don't need. But then, nobody ever listens to me. Feh. -danny -- end of forwarded message --
