10 August 1996 5:30PM Date: Fri, 09 Aug 1996 00:11:20 -0700 From: MikeyA To: dj howard@uiuc. edu Subject: Where de Mann? DannyMann, DannyMann, where for art thou (where de f@%.' are you), Dannymann????? Boy, I guess you're a bizzi-biz~i kinda guy. I note no August stuff in your "History" - I mean not only is there no stuff but not even a slot for August, so this can mean only one thing. You, sir, are working too hard. What we be gonna do wit you? Are you going to have any kind of vacation or break this year or are you like chained in a techno-dungeon in front of a keyboard, being forced to do web pages and the like? I dunno. I mean they got me working six nights a week and I'm not even supposed to have a job, but I still get in a little re-lax tyme. So, slow down, Kemosabe, and smell the roses. Take a much-deserved JimmyJohn's break or something. Go somewhere, lay on a beach (does Lake Michigan still have Montrose Beach or whatever it's called?) I recall this movie with Tom Hanks, something about a guy named Joe who hopped into a volcano. It started out with these people working at some kind of big factory; everyone just kinds shuffled into work, silently and expressionless. Offices were silent and dimly lit, etc. No fun. When I don't see any DannyMann HandyWork on the pages, I get this eerie vision of you shuffling into work like that. Whassis world comm' 2? Yup, hey there kids, sorry for not writin' here much more regularly Not that I been so busy workin' on other's web sites lately, it's just I'm fiddling a bit with a new site, over at http://206.54.252.195/ and between it and whatever else I've been doing ... well, HTML can only be taken in such quantity ya know ... Right, so I got a haircut the other day. I got to sit in the chair of the pretty woman this time. We had fun talking, though she's not the strongest English, and my Spanish is non-existant. She seems very charming anyways though, which is always nice to meet somebody beautiful and charming, even when it is just for a haircut. The day before, snapped a picture 0 the gre omas Ptace getting a hair-cut ... supposedly he said to 1 ~ front alone, so now he looks kinda front-heavy. He got his hair cut by said lady as well. I imagine I'd rather not have to convey too much preference to her as far as cutting my own hair is concerned, as I feel that a barber knows better what to do with my hair than I myself do, no? Right, it's just maybe a benefit of bad communication. I bought a new computer. A 486 upon which I intend to run NetBSD. $375 was not a bad deal at all. Uncle drove me out to Arlington Heights last n~i;top~t up, and we returned home to watch a crappy vie calle~ Ewww ... well, what can ya do? We got ers ~ watch tonite. ~hould try wandering home soon right? We got some Giordano's stuffed pizza waiting at home from last night, along with some killer double dutch chocolate chocolate chip or somesuch ice-cream for desssert. But I'm tryin' to get this harddrive repaired by Disk Salv. Grandpa aint doin' so swell. He's back from the hospital and seemed tc take the recent heat-wave intact, but he's pretty Sick... doesn't even really get out of his chair by much, been making lot~of work for Mom and Uncle John ... luckily for me they seem to take preeminent responsibility for him, being 5 they're a generation closer or such. Dunno, but I try to help out do my part. The thought that I might someday do the same for mom or maybe dad, such close, intimate care, the sort that I received at the very beginning of my life ... dunno, something interesting the way you return to the earth much the way you got started. Assuming of course, you go down figting to the last, not all get such an opportunity. Lotsa people don't get a lot of potentially intruiginc opporunities throughout our life, just a facet that adds texture. Oi, he's rambling Righto ... well 12 August 1996 7:15PM *stretch* Well, just chillin' a bit now. Bought up a new hard drive for the new computer. Tomorrow take off work early and go take test at Driver's place to get a learner's permit and such ... first step to getting a driver's license. :) Righto ... I'm a try one t out maybe can adapt to 14 August 1996 Busy hectic day again. Got my learner's permit yesterday. Btood in line at Niles DMV forever passed the test with one wrong, can operate a vehicle for a year now, with company. Yippee!? Righto ... started looking aty~~~the~ yesterday. Damn, this schtuff's easy man ... pick it up in no time! Pizza? There are places I remember, All my life, though some have changed. Some forever not for better, Some~~one, and some remained . Yup~ ~ device the other day. Every time the Os ~ ~ ... luckily things run ~her device that has capacity for both. Should be grateful should also dig the offender out physically so I don1t have to disable @ every bootup. Maybe when I run down to school eh? Yeah movin' in early down there too. ~ goes in Friday before my Tuesday scheduled check-in, though moving in mid-week is impractal for me, so I come in Sunday and live off my Nettechy roomie for awhile. Righto ... on to finishing email huh? :) Friday, 23 August 1996 Last night was a good one, even if it cost near $38. :) Well, to be sure, I bought bus ~ns~tta that ... Righto, s~out riding wit~iamo a lunch meeting with her, and K At,.a vegeteraian r~~~~irant in Skokie. I ordered the sebu~r -- just like the real thjngtl NoT!\ Well, anyways, after that I headed down ~ not after first dropping by Ryde Park Computers North. new motherboard as Juan reccomended, he helped me test it out. Also piked up two 16M SIMMs -- one for mom. Spend $130 per component plus tax .•. not bad. Not the best deal but then I didn't quite feel like chasing this concept around forever. I do have to leave in a few days anyway. Miriam left yesterday, matter of fact ... she's leaving early to meet a friend who1 5 in Pennsylvannia only 'til school starts. If you asked Miriam, she'd actually tell you every last detail you couldn't possibly want top know about the whole ordeal, that's what makes her Miriam. We were gonna go to Wallyball, only to find some grumpy old man had reserved the court that we had reserve~ a week earlier. Said he "I can't play on Court Three"' Righto, so after some figuring, we discovered some ignoramus had taken our reservation and put us on the squash court! Ai! So grumpy old man got his way ... we went bowling at Sy'~ which has computerised scorekeeping. After that we ended up ~aving dinner at a chinese restaurant on Devon, which was hosti a Jewish wedding ceremony, with all it's attendant singing and hebrew prayer. Great place, to have all the chinese decorations about and hear men singing in hebrew behind a partition - a nice reminder that y6u're in an American city. Plus the music was really nice and toe-tapping, if I understood none of it. And the food was quite good too. Afterwards, we went to see the movie ~ing~ at the Davis Arts interesting movie, a little too disgusting~ my own taste. Kate seemed to appreciate it. We played cards 'til midnite at a coffeeshop next door. I'm not saying much here, as I hate mom's keyboard. It sucks, big-time! Righto, be at school in a few days anyway ... more then, if not sooner! ftR~~g~st 1996 Argh I They've shut down the cafeteria for freshman convocation today Bad. Well, anyways, X'm not so hungry just yet, eat at ~ohn'~ later I s'pose .... let me relay ~hat I done the past few Packed up all things, headed on down. Stopped at EnterAct to pick up the 'pooters. Turns out ~lling ~is quite a breeze. Couldn't quite figure out the ~ installation, although it seemed fairly straightforward of c~rse, matters weren't helped by the first two ethernet cards not going very far My current ethernet card, a $75 SMC from Central Stores I Micro Order Center turns out not to be recognised by the OS ... even a little app that Andy and his new rommate gimme din' help none, just couldn't find the fucker On the big news, I drove down here a significant portion of the way. I blew a stop sign and violated a pick-up truck's right-of-way coming in to town, but otherwise picked things up pretty quick. ~called and asked could I work on Tuesday. I'll prolly be a le him out, but wevil see ... morning class is in DCL. So, ~-Guide, freshman Orientation ... yeah, been busy these past few days. Did the email orientation today, led by this ~~gnorant person foisted upon us by RSC. Ah well, what can one do? was a lot better by the afternoon orientaton, for which I'll give he credit, even if she was loo~ing for WinQVT on a Mac, because it was a Power "PC" ... Well, as Lei pointed out last night, the Allen girls aren't gettin' much better-lookin' although they do seem a good bit friendlier than last year's crop. A fair trade-off in my mind. I might mention some of the pleasant new folks I've met quite recently, if I could remember names well. 30 Aug 1996 Well, got the 486 up and running today.' Had to exchange eth~et cards as the last one was bad~ Got a cheaper one on order, and I think that at this point I should be able to get most any card working on this system. In fact, I'm writing on it right now, as EnterAct is lagged to hell, as mci.net is kinda fucked .... Went to Allen Hall street dance tonite. Pretty good. Tina invited me over into "the Goth s~tion" where we were dancin' to a good ol' time they played NIN "~4p Me" song but it was kinda too quite to really convey up in "the Goth section'1 so I danced over where the speakers were louder. I got frisky and went for a run. Got sweated up and took a shower, come home and start movin' homepages about ... got lagged/bored to hell, and well, now I'm here. Hello. ~ kinda dull, though I ~~~hecked out~ and to the Democrats about registering to vote down here, where m~ vote carries more weight, considering Chicago is Democrat-saturated.
